Are you trying to start a gratitude journal, but unsure of what to write? Use this list of 101 gratitude journal prompts to get started.
I gotta be honest. I’m not always inclined to feel super grateful about my days as a mom.
They can be boring, chaotic, and just plain gross.
It’s easy to get to the end of a day full of wiping butts, calming tantrums, and stepping on Legos, and be seriously reconsidering your choices in life.

WHY YOU NEED TO KEEP A GRATITUDE JOURNAL
When I sit and focus on the negative (which my human brain is designed to do) I feel lousy. If I look for the beauty in the butt-wiping, tantrum-calming, and even the Lego accidents, I’m more able to enjoy and appreciate my life.
A gratitude journal helps to train our brains to look for these beautiful little details we might otherwise miss. It reminds us of the big picture and of just how fortunate we are.

WHY YOU NEED PROMPTS FOR YOUR GRATITUDE JOURNAL
I’ve grown to love writing in my gratitude journal, but my entries can get a little bit repetitive. “Ummm….just like yesterday, I’m grateful to have healthy kids, a warm, comfortable home, and enough food to eat.” When I use prompts, though, my list can get downright poetic.
“The smell of my hazelnut coffee makes me so happy first thing in the morning. I am grateful for the memory of playing cards with my uncle as a kid. I really love that time right before dark when the sky is the perfect shade of blue.”
Wonderful stuff surrounds us all the time—even in the days when life seems bleak. The beautiful things can become part of the landscape, though. They’re such an accepted part of daily life that we don’t even see them.
I hope that these prompts will help guide you towards some things you are grateful for that you’ve forgotten about. They might be treasured memories, wonderful moments from today, or things to look forward to tomorrow, but make no mistake. When we really look closely, we usually find that life is good.

HOW TO USE THE LIST OF GRATITUDE JOURNAL PROMPTS
Any habit works best when you practice it consistently, and gratitude is no exception. Plan to include writing in your gratitude journal as part of your morning or nighttime routine in order to shift your mindset in a more positive direction. (I should also add that my gratitude ‘journal’ is a note in my iPad. Sure, there are lots of lovely books to write in, but you don’t really need any special equipment for this practice.)
When it’s time to sit down to write, you might scan this list and pick the 3-5 prompts that really inspire you. You might challenge yourself to pick a number between 1 and 101 and write about whatever random prompt you choose.
Whichever method you select to choose a prompt, writing in your gratitude journal shouldn’t be a stressful or terribly time-consuming process. Take a few minutes to jot something down, and see if it doesn’t put a smile on your face.
Oh, and don’t get down on yourself if you miss a day–or six. Although I like keeping a gratitude journal every day, research shows that journaling once a week might be even more effective.
